[ The Caldicott and Data Protection act Principles in General Practice]
There may be occasions under the above act when our patient records may need to be seen by other personnel>
The six Caldicott principles are:
1.Use of transfer of information should be justified>
2.Patient information should not be used unless it is absolutely necessary.
3.Use the minimum necessary patient information.
4.Access to patient information should be on a strict 'need to know' basis.
5.All staff must be aware of their responsibilities.
6.All staff must understand and comply with the law.
[ Teaching ]
We are a training practice and every year qualified doctors from Aberystwyth rotate through the practice as part of their training for general practice. We also at times have students from Cardiff Medical School who will sit in on your consultation with your approval.

[ Winter Flu Campaign ]
Every winter, Flu causes respiratory illness affecting people of all ages. While for most people the illness is unpleasant, it is usually self-limiting and without complications. However, among the elderly and those with certain medical conditions, Flu carries an increased risk of serious illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, often resulting in admission to hospital or even in severe cases death. Annual immunisations have been proven to reduce serious illness, hospital admissions and deaths caused by Flu. The Optimum time for immunisation is between late September until early November. The vaccine takes 10 to 14 days to reach protection levels and can last for about 1 year.
If an invitation is sent to you to attend for a Flu injection, PLEASE come to one of the clinics held either in Caersws or Llanidloes to prevent this nasty illness affecting you.

[ Minor Injuries Service]
As from Monday 1st December 2008, the practice now provides a service for the treatment of Minor Injuries, and Llanidloes Hospital on the same date ceased to provide a similar service.
The arrangements patients will need to follow in order to use this service will be different to those for making appointments in the normal way to see a GP or Practice Nurse.
The service is an additional one at the Practice which is available for patients who have a Minor Injury.
Patients with other conditions will need to continue to contact the surgery in the normal way to make an appointment to see a doctor, nurse or healthcare assistant .
THE NATURE OF MINOR INJURIES,WHICH WILL BE TREATED
As the name 'Minor Injuries Unit' suggests, the service covers injuries which are unlikely to have serious consequences, and are relatively simple to treat, and which have happened in the last two days. If it is suspected that a problem may be serious, then the patient would either go to their nearest Accident & Emergency Dept, or call 999 as appropriate. (Royal Shrewsbury or Bronglais Hospital)
For Minor injuries MORE THAN 48 HRS OLD,the patient should make an appointment to be seen by their GP,in the normal way
Examples of Injuries, WHICH WILL BE TREATED
- Cuts requiring stitching,or other simple closure technique
- Bruises
- Superficial burns and scolds
- Blows to head, without loss of consciousness
- Minor dislocations of fingers or toes
- Minor accident to hands, feet or limbs
- Recent injury of a severity not suitable for simple domestic first aid
- Foreign bodies superficially embedded in tissue
- Foreign bodies aggravating eye, but not penetrating
This list is not comprehensive, but gives a good indication of the scope of the service.
Examples of Injuries, NOT SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT AT THE SURGERY
If a patient has suffered an injury, which can be see to be more than superficial, then coming to the surgery would involve delay before treatment, because the surgery would have to assess and then advise the patient to go on to an A&E Dept or call 999.
999 calls
- Fractures or accidents to hands, feet or limbs substantially affecting function
- Penetrating Injuries
- Blow to head with loss of consciousness
- Deeply imbedded foreign bodies
- Foreign bodies in bodily orifices, including children
- Profuse bleeding
- Serious burns
- Serious burns
- Suspected overdose or poisoning
- Collapse or fall in a public place
AVAILABILITY OF THE SERVICE
The Minor Injuries Unit will be open Monday- Friday from 08.00 to 18.30 hrs (excluding bank holidays)
Outside of these hours, patients with Minor Injuries are advised to attend Welshpool Hospital Minor Injuries Unit
HOW TO ACCESS THE MINOR INJURIES SERVICE
Patients with a minor injury may either come directly to the surgery or contact the surgery beforehand by telephone on 01686 412228/412322 (Between 08.00 & 18.30).
On arrival at the surgery:
- Before 08.15hrs ring the bell for attention. (Located by the normal surgery - patient entrance door).
- Between 08.15 and 18.00 present at reception in the normal way.
- Between 18.00 and 18.30 ring the bell for attention.(Located by the normal surgery-patient entrance door).
PATIENTS PRESENTING AT THE MINOR INJURIES UNIT, INSTEAD OF MAKING A NORMAL APPOINTMENT TO SEE A GP OR NURSE
As explained above, the new service is aimed at providing a service for patients with minor injuries ONLY.
Experience has shown at other Minor Injuries Units, that some patients will try to use it as a means of 'jumping the queue' instead of waiting to be seen by a GP or Nurse in either a normal 'urgent' or 'routine' appointment.
(e.g. Chest infection,colds and coughs,fever,sore throat,aches and pains,conjuntivitis etc)
Patients requesting to be seen in the Minor Injuries Units, who have problems which would normally be investigated in a GP or Nurse appointment, will be asked by the Receptionist or Nurse to make an appointment with a GP or Nurse, and will not be treated in the Minor Injuries Unit.
This would then involve the patient leaving the surgery and returning later to be seen at their appointment.
